What to wear and how to behave inside South Indian temples: dress rules, footwear, photography, prasadam, offerings and etiquette for first-time visitors.
What should women wear to a South Indian temple?
A saree or salwar kameez is ideal, and any outfit that covers shoulders and knees is generally accepted. Avoid sleeveless tops, shorts and short dresses. Carry a shawl or dupatta, which also helps in the air-conditioned vehicle between temple stops.
Can men wear trousers inside temples?
Usually yes, though several traditional temples require a dhoti or veshti, and a few ask men to remove their shirt in the inner precinct. Dhotis can be bought or rented at stalls outside most such temples for a small amount.
Is photography allowed inside South Indian temples?
Generally not inside the sanctum, and in many temples not anywhere within the complex. Phones and cameras are often deposited at a cloakroom before security. Outer gopurams and courtyards can usually be photographed where signage permits.
